How The Soup Box works
The Soup Box is built on a simple idea: when communities actively support the people who feed them, communities become stronger, more connected, and more resilient.
Each week, shoppers buy fresh produce from local farmers, add a little extra, and place it into The Soup Box. That produce goes directly to community organisations who transform it into nourishing meals for people doing it tough.
No waste. Just community care in action.

Step 1.
Buy fresh produce from our incredible local farmers.
When you shop at your local farmers market, you are already doing something powerful to support your own local community. By shopping directly at farmer's markets, you are keeping money in regional hands, supporting farming families, and choosing food that is grown with care.
That is where The Soup Box begins.

Step 2.
Add an extra item to your shop and donate it to us.
While you're shopping, you can add just one or two extra items into your bag and drop them into The Soup Box collection point at the market. A bunch of carrots. A bag of potatoes. You can fill up a whole box if you want to. Whatever is in season, whatever you feel like, bought from local farmers.
You become part of something much larger.

Step 3.
Your fresh produce is now transformed into a nutritious meal.
Donated produce is collected and delivered to Base Services, where it is transformed into nourishing, dignified meals for vulnerable members of our community. Training is provided by Base Services to people experiencing homelessness and other barriers to employment.
Fresh ingredients mean better meals.

Step 4.
Our community grows stronger and happier, together.
Every purchase, every donation, every trainee that learns a new skill in the kitchen and every shared meal strengthens the connections shared between farmers, volunteers, businesses, and community members. We all have a role to play in shaping our local communities.
And together, the impact is extraordinary.
Where to find us
The Toowoomba Soup Box runs every Saturday throughout July and into early August at the Cobb+Co Farmers Markets.
Community members are invited to purchase fresh produce from local growers and add a donation at The Soup Box stand during market hours.
Not in Toowoomba? We are growing. Follow our Facebook page to stay across new locations, upcoming dates, and how your community can get involved.
Strong communities begin with the people who feed them.
Farmers, growers, and producers are the backbone of regional Australia.
They wake before sunrise. They work through drought and flood. They feed our communities, sustain our regions, and build the local economies that keep towns like ours alive.
But the pressures on regional farmers have never been greater - from the cost of production to the squeeze of supermarket supply chains that continue to push prices down while costs rise.
When you buy direct at the farmers market, you keep more of the food dollar with the people who earned it. And when you donate that little bit extra into The Soup Box, you are doing two things at once: supporting a farmer and feeding a neighbour.
That is not charity. That is community intelligence.
Food is dignity. Access is care.
Food insecurity is not just about hunger.
Research consistently shows that access to fresh, nourishing food is directly connected to mental health, physical wellbeing, and a person's sense of dignity and belonging in their community.
The Soup Box works alongside trusted community organisations to ensure that people doing it tough have access to fresh, seasonal produce.
Every Soup Box reflects a community that has decided: we take care of our own.

Growing our community through real connections.
The Soup Box is more than a donation point. It is a weekly ritual of shared responsibility.
It brings farmers and shoppers into direct relationship. It gives volunteers a tangible way to contribute. It shows community organisations that their work is seen and supported. And it reminds every person who walks past The Soup Box stand that they are part of something larger than themselves.
Over time, something shifts.
People stop asking "should I donate?" and start arriving at the market already thinking: "What will I put in The Soup Box this week?"
That is the change we are building. One market. One season. One community at a time.

Real Impact.
Measured in what matters.
The Soup Box was built on the belief that communities already contain the resources they need - they just need a structure to channel them.
The Soup Box is what happens when communities show up.
The Soup Box is powered by people just like you
Behind every box are real people who chose to show up.
Farmers who grow with care. Volunteers who give their Saturday mornings. Businesses who believe in backing their community. Families and neighbours who add one extra item without being asked.
The Soup Box exists because communities are strongest when people come together with care, generosity, and shared purpose.
You don't need to solve every problem to make a meaningful difference. You just need to show up.
Ways to get involved with The Soup Box
Sometimes, we just feel the need or pull to help our local communities and friends, so The Soup Box has made it easier for everyone at any level in the community to get involved.
Donate
Whatever's in season is all it takes.
The simplest way to contribute is to show up at your local farmers market, buy fresh from a local grower, and add one or two extra items at The Soup Box stand.
One bunch of carrots. One bag of potatoes. That's all it takes.
Become a volunteer
We run on the generosity of its volunteers.
Market day shifts are 2–3 hours. You'll meet local farmers, connect with community members, and come home knowing you spent your Saturday morning well.
We have a lot of fun.
Farmers & Producers
Surplus or seconds produce is always welcome.
Rather than see good food go to waste, your donation goes directly to community organisations to become meals for our friends.
If you grow it, we can help it reach someone who needs it.

What is The Soup Box?
The Soup Box is a community-led initiative operating at local farmers markets.
Shoppers purchase fresh produce from regional farmers and donate one or two extra items at The Soup Box stand. That produce is collected and delivered to trusted community organisations, who use it to create nourishing meals for vulnerable members of the community.
It supports farmers, strengthens local economies, and builds community connection — all in a single Saturday morning.
When and where does The Soup Box operate?
The Toowoomba Soup Box operates every Saturday throughout July and into early August at the Cobb+Co Farmers Markets.
Season dates and locations may vary as the initiative grows.
Follow our Facebook page
or
contact us for updates on upcoming dates, new communities, and how to get involved.
Why does The Soup Box operate at farmers markets?
Because buying direct from farmers matters.
When you shop at a farmers market, more of your money stays in regional hands rather than flowing to large supermarket chains that continue to squeeze farm-gate prices.
Supporting local producers strengthens local economies, keeps farming families viable, and builds more resilient regional communities.
The Soup Box sits at the farmers market by design. Every purchase is already doing something good. Adding one extra item simply multiplies that impact.
Where does the donated produce go?
Donated produce goes directly to trusted local social service organisations.
In Toowoomba, our current partner is BASE Services - a remarkable organisation that provides not only meals for vulnerable community members, but also Certificate I Hospitality training for 20–25 participants every six months.
The fresh, seasonal produce donated through The Soup Box means those participants work with a genuine variety of ingredients, building real cooking skills and confidence they can carry into everyday life.
Can I donate money instead of produce?
Yes, you absolutely can!
Cash donations are used to purchase fresh produce directly from local farmers and growers at participating markets.
If you cannot make it to the market in person, a financial contribution ensures nourishing produce still reaches community organisations and the people they serve.
Please contact us to find out how to contribute.
Why does The Soup Box only run for a season, not all year?
Two reasons, and both are honest ones.
First, The Soup Box deliberately runs during the coldest month of the year in Toowoomba - when need is highest and warm meals matter most.
Second, volunteer burnout is real. By running a focused, high-impact seasonal campaign rather than a year-round programme, The Soup Box stays meaningful. The message remains clear. The energy stays high. And our volunteers keep showing up, year after year.
As the initiative grows through partnerships and community support, the vision is to expand into more communities and more seasons. But for now, we would rather do one thing exceptionally well than many things adequately.
How can I volunteer?
We would love to have you.
Volunteers help with:
- Market day setup and pack-down
- Engaging with community members and donors at the stand
- Produce coordination and collection
- Logistics and community partnerships
- Spreading the word (genuinely one of the most valuable things you can do)
Shifts are 2–3 hours. The vibe is warm and the farmers market coffee is exceptional.
Reach out through our contact page and we will be in touch.
Can I start a Soup Box in my own community?
Absolutely. That is exactly what we want.
Very soon, we will have complete starter kits available, including marquee, branded signage, posters, and an onboarding guide designed to help community champions like you establish a Soup Box at your local farmers market.
Get in touch and we will make time to talk through how it works.
